Unbeatable A Thing of the Past: Why India's Test Cricket Legacy Has Crumbled

India's Rishabh Pant heads to the pavilion post his exit in the second India-South Africa Test Match

India's unexpected 0-2 series loss to the Proteas in the recently concluded Test series has left the team reeling.

In the final match, South Africa inflicted upon India a record Test defeat by runs, contrary to predictions. This represented South Africa's initial series triumph in the subcontinent in two and a half decades and India's second defeat at home in just 12 months after a 12-year unbeaten run.

The winning rhythm gained during the previous half-year has largely dissipated and the futures of multiple squad members - along with head coach Gautam Gambhir - are now uncertain.

Early Optimism Fades Quickly

The new-look squad's impressive performance in England this season, under a different skipper, pointed to a successful handover following the close together exits of key players R Ashwin, Sharma, and Virat Kohli.

A facile 2-0 victory over West Indies at the beginning of the home campaign strengthened that view, till the South Africans turned up and handed out a devastating defeat.

India were a tad unfortunate that skipper Gill suffered an injury early on in the first Test and did not participate again in the contest. But that fails to account for the side of the terribly sub-par performance in both Tests against South Africa.

Some big reputations were damaged, and multiple individuals aspiring to long red-ball careers were shown as still inadequate - in skill or mindset - for the longer format.

A Troubling Pattern

It was the second whitewash on home soil suffered by India in just over a year. In 2024, little-fancied the Kiwis had achieved a remarkable 3-0 victory which practically cost India a place in the Test championship finale.

The recent defeat to South Africa risks harming the team's hopes of qualifying for the showpiece of this cycle as well.

Previously ranked third in the WTC rankings prior to the contest, the side have dropped to the fifth spot. Even though nine more Tests are still to come, a majority are against the Aussies. Usually, playing at home would be a significant benefit - even when facing the strong Australian side. But the debacles against the Kiwis and South Africa offer no room for such comfort.

Reasons for the Slump

India's frailty in red-ball cricket has been clearly revealed. That said, why the team have struggled so much in Test matches at home recently is remains puzzling.

From the year 2000 onwards, India were regarded as unbeatable in red-ball cricket in home conditions. In hot, humid conditions and on tracks that assisted spinners and aided their squad, India brooked no opposition. The occasional loss, like in 2012-13 against England, was considered an anomaly.

Today, the team look to be vulnerable on home turf.

Facing New Zealand in last year and South Africa this year, India were hoisted by their own petard. The pitches they curated to suit their strengths went wrong completely, as opponents capitalized on them more skillfully, beating the home team's players when it was most crucial.

The Core Issue

Certain analysts propose that India is struggling in home conditions because home surfaces have been altered from turners to fast tracks to prepare players to perform better in foreign conditions.

Others highlight that the domestic T20 league, in which several international stars take part, has reduced the mystery and hardship subcontinental pitches would pose to them in the past.

Even though there is some truth in these views, it still does not explain the reason the side's results at home have seen such a dramatic drop.

Multiple Failings

Many past stars diagnose a multi-faceted challenge, not limited to a few causes.

Experts and participants have highlighted multiple deficiencies following India's embarrassing defeat to the South Africans: underrating the rivals, poor preparation, questionable picks, overconfidence, regular alterations of the starting eleven, and prioritising white-ball over red-ball cricket.

This was obvious in the displays of the squad.

Cricketers like Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, of whom great things were anticipated, were punished for their carelessness, while Sudarshan, Reddy, and Jurel - who were aiming to establish their position in the squad - came up short in skill and mindset, paying a heavy price for their nonchalant approach.

Just a few - Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep, Mohammed Siraj and Sundar - fulfilled their ability and standing - but inadequately to win matches.

Leadership Under Fire

The analysis targeted the entire setup - team selectors and backroom team were also under fire, fuelled by upset followers and critical former players. At the centre of the examination was mentor Gambhir.
