A defence minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in all cars.
Security Guidance for Defence Personnel
During a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.
He stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, however stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified level in any kind of car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
