"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

There is only a key snag: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated fans have openly coveted the honor.

It's clear something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their visuals often feature them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to make music."

"And thus everyone is invited to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Milestone

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The album was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics track endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international following.

But the band will forever be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
